In the countdown of the Presidents of the United States of America from Worst to First- at #36 I had George W. Bush, at #35 I have Barack Obama. Too soon to really tell how history will view either of these presidents. I don’t think at this point they will be viewed well. I have them ranked among the failures.

No matter how he is judged by history one thing is certain, Barry Obama is an historic president in being the first African-American president. Also the first president who wasn’t a white man. A good thing without doubt.

The passions are still too high on both Bush and Obama right now and to be honest I will be happy when I am done with this profile and done with both Bush and Obama and can move on.  OK to get a few things out there first- I am a fan of neither as a president [of course if I were a fan I wouldn’t have them ranked this low.} Do I think as some do that Obama was out to destroy the country? No. I may disagree with a lot of his views and actions but I don’t think he is some secret agent who was out to ruin the country. I think his vision of what is good for the country differs from many. Was he born in Africa? No. He was born in Hawaii. Would it have mattered if he were born in Africa or on Mars? No- his mother was an American citizen. The birther issue a bunch of non-sense.  I also think Bush and Obama seem to be likable men, being a sports fan as they are, I am certain sitting with Dubya Bush at a Ranger game would be a lot of fun, and watching a Saturday of NCAA basketball tournament games with Barry would also be enjoyable. Bad men? No. Just out of their league and overwhelmed as presidents. I have so far given eight presidents the grade of F as presidents, so they aren’t alone. I don’t know why anyone at this point would want the job.

Barack’s story is well known- his father from Kenya, his mother from Kansas meet in Hawaii at the University of Hawaii. They were married and Barack was born in 1961. His parents were divorced a few years later. Barack’s mother re-married an Indonesian graduate student and they moved to Indonesia and Barack lived there until 1971. Barack would spend most of his teenage years with his grandparents.

Barack Obama went to Occidental College in California before transferring to Columbia University. After a brief time working as a community organizer he enrolled in Harvard Law School in 1988- graduating in 1991.

Barack got a position at the University of Chicago Law School and worked as an attorney in Chicago. Got married to Michelle Robinson. In 1997 he served in the Illinois State Legislature. He would have a lightening fast rise. In 2004 he was ran and was elected to the U.S. Senate from Illinois and was off and running. Can’t say he did much as a U.S. Senator. He seemed to be running for president before you knew it, announcing in 2007.

He was a big underdog. Everyone thought the democrat nomination would go to Hillary Rodham Clinton. Of course now nearly ten years later we know what a disaster she turned out to be as a candidate – in 2008 and in 2016. Obama shocked the world by beating the heavy favorite Clinton and then defeating a poor GOP nominee Senator John McCain. History was made.  Obama won the election in 2008 rather easily 365 to 173 in the Electoral College.  He won 52.9% of the popular vote.

Taking over in January 2009 he took over a mess left by President George W. Bush. The economy was in shambles and there were wars going on in Afghanistan and Iraq. Early on he got the $787 billion  economic stimulus of passed. This would be a failure.

The legislation that would be the highlight of his eight years- the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would pass in 2010.  This controversial bill is still being discussed and at this point it is up in the air as to what will happen to it. It’s been a dumpster fire. Will it be scrapped under President Trump and a Republican Congress or will it be fine tuned to work better?

During his first term President Obama would make two appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court in Sonia Sotomayor in 2009, and Elena Kagan in 2010. Sotomayor is the first Justice of Hispanic descent. In these selections he has to be viewed from his standpoint as successful picks since they are what he thought there would be.

On the war and terrorism front- in 2011 Al-Qaeda’s mastermind- Osama Bin Laden was found and killed during a raid in Pakistan. The rest of it- the war and terrorism part became an even more complicated mess. Troops were pulled out of Iraq in 2011 leaving behind a free for all with the terror group Deash stepping in. The United States would be slow in reacting to these thugs.

President Obama would win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 much to everyone’s surprise including his own. It was felt he was given the award as much for his potential than for anything he had yet to do.

In 2012 Obama would run for re-election this time beating GOP nominee Willard “Mitt” Romney with a 332-206 Electoral College count and 51.1 % of the vote.

During his second term the controversial deal with Iraq aiming to limit their ability to develop nuclear weapons was made. After the democrat party bombed in the 2014 mid term election President Obama did what President Trump has done in his first few weeks in office recently- issued a number of executive orders. In August 2015 another controversial act the Clean Power Plan aiming to decrease carbon pollution in existing power plants.

In his second term he also negotiated a normalization of relations with Cuba and became the first U.S. POTUS to visit the island country since Cal Coolidge in the 1920’s.

The Obama presidency ended a couple weeks ago. Along with President George Dubya Bush his presidency will take a long time to fully digest. The rankings I have both at right now, may be adjusted up or down in future years, its too soon to tell.

Barry is 55 years old. What will he do next? I am sure we will hear a lot more from him in the future. My bet is the next thing we hear will be a big record breaking book deal for his presidential memoirs. He is an excellent writer, if he puts his full effort into it his memoirs could become one of the best written by a former POTUS, the potential is there. Most presidential memoirs are worth about as much as the paper they are printed on.
