West Virginia became a state this day 150 years ago-June 20th, 1863. A lot of stuff going on all over the state today as West Virginians celebrate the sesquicentennial. I have been on vacation this week across the state as my way of celebrating the 150th. West Virginia became a state in the middle of the American Civil War, breaking away from the state of Virginia. Abraham Lincoln signed papers giving the approval. West Virginia became a state ten days before the most famous battle of that war- Gettysburg.
West Virginia is a beautiful state with a fascinating and sometimes tragic history. Happy 150th!
