The Beatles Song Of The Day: “Glass Onion”

The Beatles Song Of The Day is “Glass Onion.” “Glass Onion” is on The Beatles “The Beatles” {The White Album} The song was written by John Lennon. He considered it a throwaway song. The song lyrics allude to several previous Beatles songs, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “I Am The Walrus”, “Lady Madonna”, “The Fool On The Hill”, and “Fixing A Hole.” Glass Onion was originally what John wanted to name the new group that eventually called itself Badfinger. George Harrison would say this was one of his favourite songs on the album. This song would also be one of those that had clues to the “Paul Is Dead” rumours. “Here’s another clue for you all, the walrus was Paul.” In some parts of Scandinavia, the walrus is an image of death. John would say “That was a joke. The line was put in partly because I was feeling guilty because I was with Yoko and I was leaving Paul. I was trying- I don’t know. It’s a very perverse way of saying to Paul, you know, “Here, have this crumb, this illusion, this stroke, because I’m leaving.” John Lennon: double-tracked vocal, acoustic guitar/ Paul McCartney: bass guitar, piano and recorder/ George Harrison: lead guitar/ Ringo Starr: drums and tambourine/ Henry Daymer, Eric Bowie, Norman Lederman, Ronald Thomas: violins/ John Underwood, Keith Cummings: violas/ Eldon Fox and Reginald Kilbey: cellos, The song was recorded on September 11th,12th and 13th and October 10th,1968 at Abbey Road. Producer: George Martin.

Rating ‘Glass Onion” on a scale of 1 to 5 stars **

  • “Glass Onion” was never released as a single.
  • Rolling Stone Magazine does not rank “Glass Onion” in their “The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs” list. Spignesi and Lewis rank it at #56 in their “100 Best Beatles Songs’ list. I don’t think much of the song. I think they are way off the beam in having it that high. It shouldn’t be in the top 100.
  • Length of song 2:17.

“Glass Onion” {Lennon-McCartney}

I told you about strawberry fields
You know the place where nothing is real
Well here’s another place you can go
Where everything flows
Looking through the bent backed tulips
To see how the other half live
Looking through a glass onion
I told you about the walrus and me, man
You know that we’re as close as can be, man
Well here’s another clue for you all
The walrus was Paul
Standing on the cast iron shore, yeah
Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet, yeah
Looking through a glass onion
Oh yeah Oh yeah Oh yeah
Looking through a glass onion
I told you about the fool on the hill
I tell you man he living there still
Well here’s another place you can be
Listen to me
Fixing a hole in the ocean
Trying to make a dove-tail joint, yeah
Looking through a glass onion
