On this day June 3rd 1975 the biggest event in the history of American soccer took place. The greatest player in the history of the sport- Pele signed with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Pele signed a 3 year deal for an unheard of $7 million dollars, it was the most lucrative contract in pro sports at the time. Pele would put soccer on the map in the United States. It was incredible seeing Giants Stadium in Meadowlands filled to capacity for a soccer match! Pele would play for the Cosmos from 1975 until his retirement in 1977. He played 56 games and scored 31 goals.
An outstanding documentary on the New York Cosmos of that era- “Once In A Lifetime” is well worth checking out.
