Hank Gowdy Becomes First Major League Baseball Player To Enlist In Army- World War I- This Day 1917

 

On this day in 1917 Hank Gowdy the catcher for the Boston Braves became the first major league baseball player to leave his team and enlist in the U.S. Army as the United States prepared to enter World War I. By the end of the war 289 players who played in the majors had served.
