On this day in 1989 the greatest third baseman in baseball history Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies retired. Not many retire during the middle of the season but the 39 year old Schmidt was hitting .203 and thought it was time to go. I remember that press conference because Schmidt broke down in tears as he was announcing his retirement. Nothing wrong with showing some emotion. Schmidt and George Brett played at the same time and I would rank them as #1 and #2 greatest third basemen ever. I was a bigger fan of George Brett’s but I’d have to give a narrow nod to Schmidt as the greater player.
