Mount St. Helens Volcano Erupts-This Day 1980

On this day in 1980 Mount St. Helens in erupted devestating 210 square miles of wilderness and leaving 57 dead or missing. The volcano erupted periodically during the past 4500 years, the last active period had been between 1831-1837. The story I remember most about this is before it erupted they talked to a native of the area named Harry Truman. He was an old man who had lived his whole life there and he said he wasn’t leaving. He didn’t leave. He was one of the 57 dead /missing. As I recall his body was never found.

For some strange reason when I think of the Mount St. Helens eruption I think of George Brett of the KC Royals. Brett was flirting with .400 that year. I don’t know why I associate Brett with Mount St. Helens though.
