Presidential Candidate George Wallace Shot This Day 1972

On this day in 1972 Democratic Presidential candidate George Wallace was shot 5 times by Arthur Bremer while campaigning  at the Laurel Shopping Center in Laurel, Maryland. Wallace was riding high in the national polls at the time of the assassination attempt. Wallace would survive but would be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. George Wallace died at the age of 79 in 1998. Arthur Bremer served 35 years in prison before being released in 2007. Bremer is now 62 years old.
