The Greatest Athlete To Wear #0 is Al Oliver.
Al Oliver wore #18 for the Pirates-he would wear #0 for the last 8 years of his career. I have never seen anyone hit the ball harder than Al Oliver-consistantly. He hit everything on a line. Outstanding hitter. One of those guys who falls just short of being a Hall of Famer. Oliver whined his entire career about being underrated, underappreciated. He reminded me a lot of Larry Holmes. Where Holmes came after Ali and Frazier- Oliver came to the Pirates late in Roberto Clemente’s career and then was overshadowed by Willie Stargell. Another thing that always rubbed me the wrong way about Oliver is he was moved from the outfield to first base and then back to the outfield. He didn’t like this and was vocal about it. Oliver fall short of 3000 hits which would have meant Cooperstown- close but no cigar.
Back in January we started the Greatest at different numbers and now we have finished it with #0. It was a lot of fun doing each day. Some numbers were easy, some were difficult to choose from.
