Bobby Sands MP Dies After 66 Days Of His Hunger Strike-This Day 1981

On this day in 1981 Bobby Sands MP died in the Long Kesh Prison hospital after 66 days of hunger striking. Bobby Sands was 27 years old. Bobby Sands was the leader of the hunger strike in which Irish Republican protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During his time in prison Sands was elected to the Brisish Parliament.There was widespread rioting in Belfast after his death as sympathizers clashed with British Army troops. His passing resulted in a new surge in IRA recruitment and activity. For a couple months Bobby Sands MP held the attention of the world.
