Steve Cauthen turns 53 today. Steve Cauthen is one of those who had great fame early in life and then faded into oblivion. In 1977 at the age of 17 he won all kinds of awards, Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman Of The Year, The Sporting News Sportsman of the Year, Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year and ABC’s Wide World Of Sports Athlete of the Year. In 1978 he became the youngest jockey to win the Triple Crown riding Affirmed. As he grew older he had problems making weight and moved to England where jockey’s normally compete at higher weights.
