John Wilkes Booth- Lincoln’s Assassin Meets His End-This Day 1865

On this day in 1865 they finally caught up with the assassin of Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth. Union solders corner the assassin in a Virginia barn and he is shot. He would die three hours later. His last words were supposedly as he looked into his hands ‘Useless, useless.” An outstanding book on the hunt for Lincoln’s killer is “Manhunt: The 12 Day Chase For Lincoln’s Killer” by James Swenson. There is also a tour you can take-which is given a couple times a year that I really want to take someday- following the trail of John Wilkes Booth. I am heading to DC this weekend, another trip to Ford’s Theater is in order-tomorrow.
