The Red Baron- Shot Down And Killed Over France- This Day 1918

On this day in 1918 the German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen aka “The Red Baron” was shot down and killed over Vaux-sur-Somme in France. “The Red Baron” is considered the top fighter ace of World War I. He was officially credited with 80 air combat deaths. He was 25 at the time of his death.

  1. glad you posted this – it had slipped my mind. his and oswald boelcke tactics changed the fighter game, not to mention others, ball, garros, et al. he was never really the same after getting hit in the head with a bullet in july of 1917. he quit being calculating and became reckless.
