Yankee Stadium “The House That Ruth Built” Opens- This Day 1923

On this day in 1923 the first baseball game was played at Yankee Stadium aka “The House That Ruth Built” in New York City. The Yankees would beat the Red Sox 4-1. Babe Ruth hit a 3 run home run that day into the right field seats. Asked later about his opinion of the new ballpark Ruth replied “Some ball yard.” Baseball writer Fred Lieb is the one who called it “The House That Ruth Built.” The Yankees would go on to win their first World Series that season. How much did the original Yankee Stadium cost to $2.4 million which is equal to over $32 million today. 6581 games would be played at Yankee Stadium from 1923-73 and 1976-2008.
