It is hard to believe it was 19 years ago today. I remember walking out of school, getting in my car and turning the radio on and hearing that Kurt Cobain had committed suicide. It shouldn’t have been a shock but it was. Nirvana’s “Nevermind” was the greatest album of the 1990’s and Cobain was the rock star of the 1990’s. “Nevermind” sold 10 million copies in 1992. I can’t imagine anything coming close to that today. Nirvana released one more album “In Utero” which wasn’t as well received but after “Nevermind”… how can you hope to match that. Cobain was certainly a talented but troubled young man. Marrying Courtney Love wasn’t the best decision a person could make. I cannot recall any rock death since Cobain’s that has had the outpouring of grief that his death generated. He was the voice of a generation. Nirvana was a great band. Kurt Cobain was only 27 years old.
On a personal note Kurt Cobain did a great favor for a friend of mine named Daniel Johnston who is an recording artist and an artist. At the MTV Awards one year Cobain wore one of Daniel’s t-shirts for Daniel’s “Hi! How Are You” album. That helped generate interest in Daniel’s career and in interviews Cobain was always very kind in mentioning his fandom of Daniel Johnston.
