On this day in 1968 Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop” speech at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee. King was in Memphis to support the Memphis Sanitation Strike. His speech was about the strike, he called for unity, economic actions, boycotts and nonviolent protests while challenging the United States to live up to its ideals. At the end of the speech, he discusses the possibility of an untimely death. On the next day he would be assassinated.
