The Greatest Athlete To Wear #63 {Gene Upshaw}

The Greatest Athlete To Wear #63 is Pro Football Hall of Fame guard-and Oakland Raider Gene Upshaw.

This is the most difficult decision yet on a number because there are a handful of players who are equal. You could go with 5 different players here and be right.

Notable #63’s- Willie Lanier was one of the great linebackers of the 1960-s and 70’s with the Kansas City Chiefs. A Hall of Famer. Lee Roy Selmon was the first ever draft pick of the Tampa Bay Bucs and for the most part spent his career with awful teams but he was such a standout even playing with a terrible team he made the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Mike Munchak played in 9 pro bowls in his 12 years with the Oilers. He is a Hall of Famer. Dermontti Dawson was a Hall of Fame center for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Many believe he was even better than the man he replaced-another Hall of Famer Mike Webster. If you went with any of these four guys as the best #63 It would be hard to argue against.

Fuzzy Thurston was part of the great Green Bay offensive line during the Lombardi years. One of the great guard tandems along with Jerry Kramer. Ernie “Fats” Holmes was part of the Steelers Steel Curtain of the 1970’s. He had a couple years where he was outstanding before weight and personal problems ended his career.

The choice as the greatest athlete to wear #63 is Gene Upshaw who is a Pro Football Hall of Fame guard from the great Oakland teams of the 1970’s.  They would get my vote for the greatest offensive line ever- at one time they had 4 of the 5 members -future Hall of Famers. Upshaw and Art Shell were the left side of the line. He played his entire career with the Raiders from 1967-81. He was a 6 time Pro Bowl selection. He was a member of the All-70’s team and the NFL 75th Anniversary team.
