The Beatles Song Of The Day: “I’ll Be Back”

The Beatles Song Of The Day is “I’ll Be Back.” “I’ll Be Back” is the final song on The Beatles third album “A Hard Day’s Night.” The Beatles would make albums superior to “A Hard Day’s Night” but I don’t think they made one that had as much enthusiasm in it and was so enjoyable. “I’ll Be Back” was another John Lennon song on the album. John would later call the song ‘an early favourite.”  John Lennon: double-tracked vocal and acoustic rhythm guitar/ Paul McCartney: harmony vocal, bass guitar and acoustic guitar/ George Harrison: harmony vocal and lead acoustic guitar/ Ringo Starr: drums. The song was recorded at Abbey Road on June 1st, 1964. Producer: George Martin. John based this song on Del Shannon’s 1961 hit “Runaway” musically. The song was Lennon’s most emotional to that date. A really underrated song in my opinion. It was also after all the enthusiasm and excitement on this album-an end that was very downbeat. A sign of things to come and more maturity in The Beatles songwriting.

Rating “I’ll Be Back” on a scale of 1 to 5 ***** a classic.

  • Rolling Stone Magazine did not rank “I’ll Be Back” in their “The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs” list but Spignesi and Lewis rank it at #34 on their “100 Best Beatles Songs” list. I think Rolling Stone Magazine missed the boat on this one.
  • Length of song:2:20.
  • “I’ll Be Back” is a unique Beatles song. It is purely acoustic and has two fully realized bridges instead of the traditional single bridge. The song also has some of John’s best singing to that date.

“I’ll Be Back” {Lennon-McCartney}

You know if you break my heart I’ll go
But I’ll be back again
Cos I told you once before goodbye
But I came back again
I love you so I’m the one who wants you
Yes, I’m the one
Who wants you, oh ho, oh ho, oh
You could find better things to do
Than to break my heart again
This time I will try to show that
I’m Not trying to pretend
I thought that you would realize
That if I ran away from you
That you would want me too
But I got a big surprise Oh ho, oh ho, oh
You could find better things to do
Than to break my heart again
This time I will try to show that I’m
Not trying to pretend
I wanna go but I hate to leave you,
You know I hate to leave you , oh ho, oh ho, oh
You, if you break my heart
I’ll go But I’ll be back again
