The U.S. House Of Representatives Votes To Impeach POTUS Andrew Johnson-This Day 1868

On this day in 1868 the United States House of Representatives voted to impeach #17 POTUS Andrew Johnson, citing his removal of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton as a violation of the Tenure of Office Act. Johnson would be the first POTUS to be impeached. The vote in the U.S. House was 128 to 47. The trial would be held in the U.S. Senate and the vote was 35 guilty 19 not guilty, one short of the 2/3rds need to convict and remove Johnson from office.
