The greatest athlete to wear #89- Gino Marchetti, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, a defensive end who played 13 seasons with the Baltimore Colts.
There are a number of notable #89’s. In football Iron Mike Ditka one of the greatest tight ends in the history of the game. Otis Taylor a Hall of Fame wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs. Fred Dryer was an outstanding defensive end in the 1970’s for the Rams. Steve Tasker is the most celebrated special teams player in NFL history. Mark Bavaro was one of the top tight ends of the 1980’s. Wes Chandler a fine wide receiver during the San Diego Chargers “Air Coryell” days. Dave Robinson who was just elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a linebacker wore #89. In hockey Alexander Mogilny was a big goal scorer during his career with the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks.
My vote goes to Gino Marchetti as the greatest of the great #89’s. You don’t hear his name much anymore. He played and dominated in the 1950’s with the Colts. Marchetti made 11 Pro Bowls. He was considered the finest defensive end in the early history of the game. He was great at stopping the run but was an outstanding pass rusher. He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972. The greatest football player ever Jim Brown said of Marchetti “The two toughest men I ever knew were Gino Marchetti and Andy Robustelli.”
