Sago,West Virginia Coal Mine Disaster- This Day 2006

On this day in 2006 an explosion in a coal mine in Sago, West Virginia trapped and killed 12 miners while leaving one miner in critical condition. Sago is located in Upshur County, West Virginia near the county seat of Buckhannon. It was the worst mining disaster since 2001 in the United States and the worst in West Virginia since the Farmington Mine Disaster in 1968 in which 78 were killed.

Sadly in 2010 West Virginia suffered another mine disaster when 29 were killed at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County.
