On this day in 1862 in the American Civil War the Battle of Fredericksburg took place. The Confederates were led by General Robert E. Lee, the Union by Major General Ambrose Burnside. This would be one of Lee’s greatest victories. On December 13th the Union made a frontal attack on the entrenched Confederates on the heights behind the city. Union casualties were more than twice as heavy as those suffered on the Confederate side. It would be the end of Burnside’s command of the Union Army. He would be relieved of command a month later. Things were going pretty well for the Confederates at this point in the war.
