On this day in 1884 the Washington Monument was competed. They started building the Washington Monument in 1848 but building was halted from 1854 to 1877 because of lack of funding and then the American Civil War. The monument was made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss. It is the world’s tallest stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk, standing 555 feet 5 1/8ths inches.
I have been up the Washington Monument four or five times. The most memorable was when I was 8 years old. Back then they would let you walk down the stairs. I remember going down the stairs and thinking I was never going to get to the bottom.
The momument is closed now due to damage from the earthquake in August of 2011. It may re-open in 2014. I’ve always kind of thought that the Washington Monument was one of the more overrated sites in Washington D.C.
