On this day in 1842 the University of Notre Dame was founded. The University of Notre Dame is located in South Bend, Indiana. Today there are nearly 12,000 undergraduate students at Notre Dame. Their nickname is the Fighting Irish. Of course Notre Dame is the most storied football program in college football history. Over the years the Fighting Irish have won 13 National Championships. Some of the most noted coaches in college history coached at Notre Dame-Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy and Ara Parseghian. They have had 7 Heisman Trophy winners. Their last Heisman winner was Tim Brown in 1987.Their last National Championship was in 1988. This year they have made a big comeback, their first great season in 20 years and will play in the National Championship against the SEC Champion. I always root against Notre Dame but I respect what they have done over the years.

Their basketball program has been solid but not as spectacular. They did have one of the great upset victories ever though when they ended UCLA’s record 88 game winning streak back in 1974.

The University of Notre Dame is one of the top colleges in the United States.
