Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadians became the first hockey goaltender to wear a facemask on this day in 1959.  Plante developed and tested many versions of the mask. Plante is one of the greatest goalies in NHL history. He played from 1947-75. He was the goalie on the Montreal Stanley Cup Champions 6 times.
