What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?- Dan Rather 81 Today

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather-81 today. Rather made his name covering Hurricane Carla in Galveston, Texas in 1961. His star was then on the rise. He would eventually replace Uncle Walter Cronkite as the CBS News anchor in 1981 and hold that job until 2005.

I was not a big fan of Rather’s politics but I have to say he was someone I enjoyed watching just for entertainment purposes. He was so weird you never knew what he would do or say. Whether he would get mad and walk off the set or at the end of the broadcast say something like “Courage” out of nowhere. And of course he inspired the R.E.M. song “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth” when he was attacked in 1986 on the streets of New York. Rather always seemed on the verge of cracking up.

  1. Carla. That storm was nearly the undoing of the Maddux clan. Family house was heavily damaged by that storm. Family lost everything except what was able to be packed in the car and travel trailer.
