NIkita Khrushchev Pounds His Shoe On A Desk At United Nations Meeting-This Day 1960

Nikita Khrushchev

On this day in 1960 at a United Nations General Assembly meeting Soviet Union leader Nikita Khrushchev pounded his shoe on a desk to protest a Philippine assertion of Soviet Union colonial policy being conducted in Eastern European Europe. Khrushchev was always a colorful figure. Khrushchev was riding high in the early part of the 1960’s. He got the better of POTUS Kennedy up until the Cuban Missle Crisis in October 1962. The 5’3″ rotund Khrushchev would be removed from power in 1964. He died in 1971 at the age of 77.

  1. I was a young child when his shoe pounding brought my attention to the Soviet leader. He may have been responsible for my eventual interest in international politics and foreign affairs.
