College Football- Georgia Tech 222 Cumberland University 0- This Day 1916

For those of you who thought that the Oklahoma State over Savannah State score was a little lopsided how about this one. On this day in 1916 Georgia Tech 222 Cumberland University 0. The most lopsided college football game in history.

Earlier in the year the Cumberland baseball team had crushed Georgia Tech 22-0. There were allegations that the Cumberland team had used professionals. There is a thought that is what drove Georgia Tech to run up the score. Also at that time teams were ranked according to how many points they scored. Georgia Tech coach John Heisman didn’t feel that was a true indicator of how good a team was and may have unleashed his players to prove that point.

Georgia Tech scored every time they got the ball. The final stats -Georgia Tech did not pass the ball once. 40 rushing attempts for 1620 yards and 32 touchdowns. Cumberland had 27 rushing attempts for -96 yards and 9 fumbles lost. Tony Romo must have been the Cumberland QB- the were 2-18 passing with 6 interceptions.

The coach of Georgia Tech was John Heisman the man who the Heisman Trophy is named for.
