On this day in 1980 Iraq invaded Iran. The war would drag on, not ending until August 1988 making it the longest conventional war of the 20th century. The end result was all that fighting ended in a stalemate. Between 320,000 and 720,000 Iranian soldiers lost their lives,  between 150,000 and 375,000 Iraqi soldiers lost their lives in the war. Both sides lost around 100,000 civilians due to the war.
