Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen turns 78 today. He is still going strong at 78, earlier this year he released a new album and he has been touring this year. He is one of the great songwriters of the past 50 years. He is not the most prolific artist, he has only released a dozen studio albums in the past 45 years. He is also released books of poetry. The documentary “I’m Your Man”came out in 2006 and brought a lot of attention to Cohen. Numerous artists have covered his songs, his most famous song is one of the great great songs of all times “Hallelujah” which has been covered by countless artists, John Cale’s version being my favourite. Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright and others have covered it. My favourite Leonard Cohen album is the recent “Live In London” which sounds great. His latest album “Old Ideas” has been his most successful on the US charts- it peaked at #3 this spring. Leonard Cohen is an interesting man.

Holy crap! I love John Cale, but I digress. Happy birthday Leonard. After Neil Young, the greatest songwriter Canada has produced.
I think Leonard is a superior songwriter…but Neil is the greater performer..
