Confederates Capture Harper’s Ferry And 12,419 Union Troops -This Day 1862

On this day in 1862 during the American Civil War- Confederate forces captured the town of Harper’s Ferry, Virginia and captured 12,419 Union troops. They also took 73 artillery pieces and 13,000 rifles. The capture of the 12,419 troops was the largest Union surrender during the Civil War and the largest ever until the Battle of Bataan during World War II.

Two days later the Battle of Antietam would begin in nearby Sharpsburg, Maryland. A battle that would have the highest number of deaths in a single day in American military history.
