First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland Gives Birth To A Daughter In The White House This Day 1893

On this day in 1893 First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland, wife of President Grover Cleveland gave birth to a daughter Esther in the White House.

When Grover Cleveland was elected for his first term he was a bachelor. In 1885 Frances Folsom the daughter of a friend of his visited Washington. They would soon become engaged and would be married in 1886. He is the only POTUS to be married in the White House. At the age of 21 Frances was the youngest First Lady ever. Cleveland was 49 at the time.

Esther Cleveland would live until 1980 She was the first child of a POTUS to be born in the White House.. He sister Ruth would be more famous [although she died at age 12} The urban myth has always been that the candy bar “Baby Ruth” was named for her. The candy bar wasn’t named that until 1920. There was a baseball player around at that time named Babe Ruth. It is more likely that is how the candy bar got its name.
