Golfing legend Tom Watson turns 63 today. When I think of the British Open I think first of Tom Watson. Tom Watson has won 5 British Opens. He owned that tournament in the late 70’s-mid 80’s. He has also won the Masters twice and the US Open once. He has never won the PGA. Tom Watson has been PGA Player of the Year 6 times. Only Eldrick Woods with 9 Player of the Year awards tops Watson. Watson is one of the greatest links players and is known for his great play in bad weather conditions.
In 2009 Tom Watson nearly did the impossible. At age 59 he was winning the British Open until a late collapse. He would end up losing a playoff to Stewart Cink. What a great story that would have been. The oldest major tournament champion ever was Jack Nicklaus who won The Masters at 46. Someone winning at 59 boggles the mind. It was 26 years after his last major title. Again, what a great story that would have been. I was rooting for him!
