Terry Fox, the incredible courageous young man who had a leg amputated but tried to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research was born on this day 1958 in Winnipeg. He lost his leg to cancer in 1977. In 1980 he had the idea of running across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He ran for 143 days and covered 3339 miles before he had to end his journey when cancer returned. He would die on June 28th, 1981. He was 22 years old.
Terry Fox began his run near the Atlantic Ocean in St.John’s, Newfoundland and had to stop at Thunder Bay, Ontario
In 1999 Terry Fox was voted by the Canadian people as Canada’s greatest hero. A great documentary was made as part of ESPN’s 30/30 series directed by NBA great Steve Nash who when he was young was inspired by Terry Fox. It is called “Into The Wind” I love that 30/30 series and the Terry Fox story is one the best in the series. Terry Fox even 31 years after his death is still raising money for cancer research. 500 million Canadian dollars has been raised. The Terry Fox Run is the world’s largest one day run for cancer research.
In Canada many buildings ,roads and parks have been named for Terry Fox. When you talk about heroes they don’t get much greatest than Terry Fox.

Great post. And this was top 5 of the 30 for 30.
a very moving documentary.. thank you steve nash..
