The V Olympiad- the 1912 Stockholm Games were a key turning point in my mind for the survival of the Olmypics. The previous three games were poorly organized and the future of the games was in doubt. The Stockholm Games was in my mind the first modern games. It also had the first great Olympic legend- Jim Thorpe and American Indian.
The games were held from July 6th to July 22nd. Finally they were getting this right. The other games were held over a period of months. There was also a big jump in the number of competitors. 2490 men and 57 women participated in the games from 28 nations. There were 102 events in 14 sports.
The 1912 Stockholm Games were well organized and the first games to use electronic timing devices and a public address system. The games were opened on July 6th by King Gustev of Sweden. The Stockholm Games would be the first games that were a great success.
Sweden won the most medals with 24 gold and 65 total. The United States finished second with 23 gold medals and a total of 61. Third, was Great Britain who had 10 gold and 41 total. Fourth place was Finland with 7 gold and 14 total. Coming in fifth was France with 7 gold and 14 total.
As mentioned before the 1912 Stockholm Games had the first big Olympic hero in Jim Thorpe. From this point on when I think of an Olympic Games there are always one or two athletes would be the big star when it was all over. I will profile from here on the star athlete from each games. Jim Thorpe I will post about later.
The Stockholm Olympic Stadium which was built for the games is still in use. It is pictured below.

pictured below is the 100 meter dash finals. It was won by Ralph Craig of the United States. The USA went 1-2-3 in that race.

George Patton should have won a medal in modern pentathlon. they did not have the targets to verify that the target was actually hit. many have surmised that Patton actually had several shots go through a previous hit on the target.
and no question that jim thorpe was the big winner at these games.
