Ten Points about John Quincy Adams
1- He was raised by his father POTUS #2 John Adams to be president. They had great expectations for him. I can’t think of any other president who was raised this way. Some may say Old Joe Kennedy raised John to be president but it wasn’t until Joe Jr. died in WWII that the focus was shifted to John. Joe Jr. was the oldest he was being groomed by the old man.
2. John Quincy Adams as president liked to get up in the morning and walk down to the Potomac River and skinny dip for an hour or so before going back to the White House and getting to work. Washington was a different town back then!
3.At this point in American history being Secretary of State was considered the stepping stone to the Presidency. Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, JQ Adams. Van Buren and Buchanan all served as Secretary of State. Interesting how that changed- no Secretary of State has become president since the 1850’s
4.John Quincy Adams is considered one of the brightest of all our presidents but his personality wasn’t right for the presidency. He was arrogant and introverted. He had great plans but due to the “Corrupt Bargain of 1824- Congress was a thorn in his side. He had a miserable presidency.
5- Like his father, great American, far from great president.
6. His personality was like his fathers. There have only been two presidents who did not go to their successors inauguration. You guessed it- John Adams left town before Jefferson’s inauguration and JQ Adams didn’t hang around for Andy Jackson’s.
7.John Quincy Adams was the first president to have his photograph taken.
8. His father POTUS #2 John lived to see his son become president.
9. After his presidency John Quincy went back home to Massachusetts. Citizens in his district came to him and wanted him to run for Congress. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848 at age 80. He used his position in Congress to fight against slavery.
10-He was in the U.S. Capitol building February 21, 1848 and suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage. He was moved to the Speaker’s Room in the Capitol where he died 2 days later. He would be buried beside his parents.
not sure with the focus on the way one looks today that JQ here would be electable today.
more gets focused on what ones haircut cost or if the part is on the left or the right instead of focusing on someone that actually has some ideas.
I just think look at his picture..no way would he be elected today..JQ probably had more ideas before breakfast then Obama or Romney will have in a lifetime…
had to be that dip in the potomac every morning.
I think I can imagine say a Biden-Rumsfield duel…before I can imagine a president slipping off in the morning to go skinny dipping in the potomac..
if that was the case today we would elect our first supermodel president.and they would probably waive the age 35 rule for kate upton.
sounds like a good idea to me…who will be her running mate?
LOVE JQ!
Didn’t know about the skinny dipping. Ha.
Nice post.
thanks.. i should have added the story about the lady reporter. she had been trying to get an interview with John Quincy without success. Her name I believe was Anne Royall. She heard about JQ’s morning habit… one morning he gets in the river. She come down to the river bank and sits near his clothes. Told him she wouldn’t leave unless he gave her an interview….she got the interview..
Ha! I love it. I bet he gave her the same look as he has in the above photo.
