Satchel Paige Born on this day in ????

The legendary baseball pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige was born on this day-in 1906? Satchel gave conflicting years. We know he did die in 1982. Unfortunately the great Satchel pitched most of his career in the Negro Leagues. After Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and at the age of 42 Paige did get his chance to finally pitch in the Major Leagues. His last appearance in the majors would be in 1965 at the age of 59.

It is hard to judge how great Satchel Paige was but from all accounts he was an outstanding pitcher and would have been an great  pitcher in the major leagues had he received the opportunity at a younger age. It’s a shame that Satchel, Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston and the other Negro League players never had the chance to play in the major leagues.

Satchel Paige’s “Rules for Staying Young.”
