Justin Verlander

Justin Verlander came within two outs of picking up his third career no-hitter this evening against the Pirates. He struck out 12. Best pitcher in the game right now. The Pirates have been 1 hit-twice now this season. The Pirates haven’t been no-hit since Bob Gibson in August 1971.

There is nothing like seeing a no-hitter in person. I have been fortunate enough to have seen two- the only two Pirate no-hitters pitched in Pittsburgh. John Candelaria in 1976 against the Dodgers and the combined ten inning no-hitter in 1997- Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon vs the Astros. The combined no-hitter, Cordova went 9 innings- scoreless game. He’s pinch-hit for. Rincon goes an inning and Mark Smith ends the game in the bottom of the 10th with a pinch-hit home run. One of the few highlights the Pittsburgh Pirates have had in the past 20 miserable seasons.

Only 4 pitchers have 3 or more no-hitters in baseball history. Nolan Ryan had 7, Sandy Koufax 4,  Bob Feller and Cy Young both had 3. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Verlander join that group before his career ends. Jason Varitek has the record for catching the most no hitters- 4.
