“Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”- one of the best songs on The Beatles iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album- written by John Lennon- covered here by John’s friend Elton John. John Lennon appears on the song -backing vocals and guitars- under the name Dr. Winston O’Boogie. The b-side was also written by Lennon- from his Mind Games album. Not the greatest of Beatles covers- but Elton at the time couldn’t miss.
From wikipedia-
During their collaboration, Elton John appeared on John Lennon’s song “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night.” . Lennon promised to appear live with Elton at Madison Square Garden if “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” became a #1 single. It did, and on Thanksgiving Night, 28 November 1974, Lennon kept his promise. They performed “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night” , and “I Saw Her Standing There.” In introducing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, Elton John said he believed it to be “one of the best songs ever written.”
I love this single & to me, one of not many Beatles songs where the cover version is as good as the original. Of course having Lennon along for the ride helped.
I loved this song with a crazy fervor back when it was hit, and couldn’t get enough of it. That fervor has since cooled a bit, but I still think it’s a terrific cover. I agree with Dave that it’s as good as the original.
One of my all-time favorite albums. Had a 8- track that I wore out the summer I got it.
