Deep Tracks From 1971: ‘Mr. Bojangles.’ In her long career Nina Simone only had one Top 40 hit- way back in 1959 a #18 with “I Loves You, Porgy’ but she wasn’t a singles artists- her music over the years would touch upon classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel and pop. She was also a force and maybe remembered just as much as a political activist.
‘Mr. Bojangles’ was written by singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker in 1968 but the hit version was by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a #9 in 1971.
Beautiful cover and tune. The version of the song I first knew was Sammy Davis, Jr.’s rendition, which I like as well. The first time I ever of Nina Simone was in 1987 when all for a sudden “My Baby Just Cares for Me” became a hit.
