Deep Tracks From 1971: ‘Going Mobile’- The Who. There was a lot of great music released in 1971- and certainly as far as albums go The Who- Who’s Next has to rank very high in any rock music fans list of the best albums from that year- I would have it in my Top 20 of all time. In last years draft it was one of the albums I had on my short list to select but Badfinger20 beat me to it! To my ears every song on the albums was a hit single- in reality there were two Top 40 hits on the Billboard charts from the album- ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ and ‘ Behind Blue Eyes’ -the other seven album tracks- are songs I’ve heard over the years on album oriented rock radio and of course when I play Who’s Next which over the years has added up to hundreds of times. My favorite album by The Who without question.
‘Going Mobile” written by Pete Townshend is also the only song on the album in which the lead vocals are also done by Pete. As with most of the songs on Who’s Next- it was originally written to be part of a big Townshend project called Lifehouse- which was abandoned. “Going Mobile’ is about having a mobile home and being able to travel the highways as you wish. Townshend himself a year earlier had purchased a mobile home.
to me, in the upper echelon of songs from their catalog
I didn’t realize this is considered a deep track. It got a lot of play in my town. It’s a favorite of mine.
anything not a hit single- I consider for these purposes a deep cut.
I’m embarrassed to say I never knew what this song was about but always like listening to it.
Great song, Hans. I have to agree with you “Who’s Next” is the band’s Mount Rushmore – so many outstanding tunes on here! It’s also nice to hear Pete on lead vocals.
This was one f my old man’s stock sayings before the Who recorded this track. Love it.
