Deep Tracks From 1971: ‘Fireball’- Deep Purple. The title track from Deep Purple’s album of the same name. While not a hit in the US- it peaked at #15 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was written based on life experiences of Deep Purple’s singer-songwriter Ian Gillan. Also unlike most Deep Purple songs- no guitar solo.

While I acknowledge there are various great late ‘60s/early ‘70s hard rock bands, Deep Purple remain my favorite hard rock group to this day.
I always loved how Jon Lord’s Hammond got “equal treatment” to Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar. Ian Paice is a beast of a drummer, and Roger Glover is a great bassist. I also thought Ian Gillan was their vocalist. The classic lineup of Deep Purple just was a hell of a band!
“Fireball” is a cool tune. So is the b-side “Demon’s Eye”. Their Mount Rushmore to me remains “Machine Head” – there’s literally no filler on that album!
