For an artist to take on a recent classic song- and master it- is rare- last week I did a feature on Ray Charles doing ‘Yesterday’- Ray Charles certainly had the genius to turn any song into his own- and so did Aretha Franklin. In 1970- Simon And Garfunkel had a #1 hit with “Bridge Over Troubled Water” -it won a Grammy. In 1971 Aretha took it on- and also won a Grammy -for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
I had not heard Aretha’s rendition of that song – incredible! Basically, she turned it into a gospel song. As much as I dig the original, she definitely kicked it up a few notches!
at first I thought- this song was mislabeled – this isn’t Bridge Over Troubled Water- she did make it something else.. what a talent.
It truly is a remake rather than merely a cover.
