‘Maneater’ was the 4th #1 hit Daryl Hall and John Oates had in the 1981-1982 period. It was their 5th #1 overall- they still had one more #1 hit in them. John Oates would later say that while people assumed the song was about a woman- “about NYC in the ’80s. It’s about greed, avarice, and spoiled riches. But we have it in the setting of a girl because it’s more relatable. It’s something that people can understand. That’s what we do all of the time”
‘Maneater’ was the 15th and final #1 hit of 1982- and it carried over into 1983 holding the top spot for 2 weeks into that year.
My favorite Hall & Oates song.
