Great Baseball Nicknames- ‘Eyechart’- Doug Gwosdz. As a major league baseball player for the San Diego Padres- catcher Doug Gwosdz- was rather forgettable. He had only 104 at bats in parts of four seasons- 1981-84- and hit a sad .144 in his career- what I remember about him is his nickname- ‘Eyechart’ due to his last name- which does resemble a line on an eyechart.
“Gwosdz,” a fine Polish surname meaning “nail.” People mistakenly assume all Polish surnames end in “ski.”
Don’t remember him, but I remember the more recent relief pitcher nicknamed “Scrabble” for similar reasons – Mark Repczynski … spelling of last name may be wrong, hence the nickname
That’s up there with Penitentiary face.
