It doesn’t surprise me that ‘Endless Love’ went to #1- Lionel Richie was at his peak as a songwriter- and at his commercial peak at this period- but #1 for 9 weeks? There never seemed to me to be anything special about this song- easy listening- Lionel certainly wrote dozens of better songs. He could have wrote this in his sleep. Of course “You Light Up My Life’ was #1 for 10 weeks a few years earlier-and ‘Endless Love’ is a lot better than that. One of the big hits of the year- three singles were #1 for a total of 28 weeks in 1981- ‘Bette Davis Eyes’- one of the best singles of the year 9 weeks, “Endless Love’ 9 weeks and Olivia Newton-John’s biggest hit- Physical’ closed out the year with 10 weeks at the top.
I agree that this song is a real snooze-fest. It’s a pretty-enough romantic ballad, but there’s nothing particularly special about it that deserved being #1, let alone for so many weeks.
This was cool when I was 14. Not so much, now…
