#169: ” Roll Over Beethoven” from With The Beatles. Chuck Berry’s ‘Roll Over Beethoven” was a John, Paul and George favorite from the beginning- even before The Beatles were The Beatles. The original Chuck Berry tune is one of his many classics. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the Chuck Berry version at #97 in their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. The Beatles cover here was sung by George. A decent version of the song. The much covered song was also done or overdone in 1973 by Electric Light Orchestra- whose version clocked in at 8 minutes. No one has touched the greatness of the original by Mr. Berry.
#168: ‘I Call Your Name” from the Long Tall Sally EP in the UK, The Beatles Second Album in the US. Now found on Past Masters I. “I Call Your Name”- a Lennon-McCartney tune was written mainly by John Lennon. This was an old one- John had written it before the formation of The Beatles- and in 1963 gave it to Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas. Unhappy with the Billy J. Kramer arrangement- John had The Beatles do a version of the song themselves. The Beatles version is noteworthy- as the first Beatles song to feature George on his Rickenbacker guitar.
Gotcha work cut out here! Well done!
Thank you!
Ah, that sweet Rickenbacker sound!
Is this the Rickenbacker guitar Geo had his sister buy him when he spent the summer in the US with her?
The Mamas & Papas also recorded a cover of “I Call Your Name” https://youtu.be/HprdvsYeCIg
