My Music Listening Journal 2021: Day 40: Tuesday January 9, 2021

- THE REPLACEMENTS: PLEASE TO MEET ME: 1987: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: ROCK: My favorite album by one of my favorite 80’s bands. I was glad to see in his countdown of albums by The Replacements- Music City Mike agreed with me – Pleased To Meet Me also his favorite- it seems like most go with Let It Be or Tim. Mount Rushmore: “Alex Chilton”, ‘I.O.U.” “Skyway” and “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Paul Westerberg was at his peak as a songwriter in this period of time.

- THE KINKS: THE KINKS: 1964: 3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: ROCK: The majority of songs on The Kinks debut album- are covers- doing R&B covers would not be their forte. There are a couple great originals – the classic “You Really Got Me” and “Stop Your Sobbing” which save the day and show the potential Ray Davies had as a songwriter and the band had as a whole. “You Really Got Me” went to #1 in the UK and #7 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
I’m still amazed that Stop Your Sobbing was a Kinks original. Anyone other than The Pretenders doing it doesn’t sound right.
Two from my pile. CB loves covers.
