Anne Murray had been on the singles charts starting back in 1970 with “Snowbird”- Elvis’s favorite song. She’d had some success on the charts throughout the decade but ‘You Needed Me” became her first and only #1 hit. She had been in somewhat of a slump- her last Top 40 had been back in 1974 with a remake of The Beatles “You Won’t See Me.” The song was also a cross over hit going to #4 on the country charts. She would win a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Murray would later say she wasn’t surprised by the success of the song- that she broke down in tears the first time she tried to sing it.
I always liked Anne Murray. While her voice wasn’t powerful like Linda Ronstadt, Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin, it was still warm and vibrant, more in the vein of Karen Carpenter or Carly Simon.
Well said!
I miss her on the radio.
