It’s incredible looking back on it- that this single was so popular- look at the list above of countries where it was #1. There must have been a bad taste bug going around in 1974. Carl Douglas a Jamaican drummer- had his moment of fame- it was his only hit. The TV show Kung Fu was also on at this time- maybe that helped the popularity of this turd, I don’t know.
I think you nailed the reasons why it did as well as it did. The excessive rhyming, with “ing” gets to be a little much. I don’t dislike the song, I just don’t like it all that much π
oh, you got Carl into a fighting mood now, Hans.. a kung fu fighting one at that! LOL. those novelty songs were big in the 70s!
1974 was an odd year for music, with some of the worst stinkers ever – (You’re) Having My Baby, The Streak, Seasons in the Sun and The Night Chicago Died to name but a few – and this one’s right up there. I actually liked it OK back when it came out, but now share your low opinion of it.
